The news that Eskom's load shedding will persist for the next 18-months will put pressure on households and, combined with the pressure on water resources, greening and energy-efficient features are fast becoming must-haves for homes.
If you have not yet considered introducing these features into your home, then now is the time to start. Given the realities of energy and water supply, these are a good investment and buyers are likely to be swayed by these added features.
As a starting point, be sure to download a Load Shedding App, either Loadshedct or EskomSePush (if not already done) to stay abreast of the schedules and so that you can plan ahead by preparing hot water, meals and other essentials.
Basic measures in the home include cutting back on electricity usage by installing energy efficient lights/globes and then activities such as turning off lights and appliances when not in use and adjusting your geyser and fridge temperatures.
Consider solar heating (if you don't already have that) as it will not just save on electricity costs and power your hot water but can power your home including the security system. You can start with a basic system and then build from there.
At the very least, an inverter system is a worthwhile investment as it can power your security system, internet and television and ensure that you can still charge your phone. These are very affordable but be sure to get advice to ensure you invest in an adequate system.
Another great addition are LED lights which you can plug in at various spots around the home. They charge when the electricity is on and will then come on automatically when the power is out so that you are not left in total darkness.
A water tank for rainwater catchment (if not already done) is another sought-after greening feature. Consider installing a grey-water system for non-potable needs. Again, you can start with a basic system for outdoor garden and other needs and build up from there to a more sophisticated system that feeds indoor areas such as toilets.
There are many options available and doing internet research is a good place to start. There are also suppliers in the various local communities, so keep a lookout on your local Facebook pages for ideas and suppliers.
Note also that load shedding leaves homes and neighbourhoods vulnerable and it is more important than ever to consider joining the Hout Bay Neighbourhood Watch which includes the Hout Bay and Llandudno Community Safety Information Center (CSIC), a 24-hour emergency room to assist with security service providers, SAPS and/or other emergency response teams as needed.
